I have a buddy online who was taking Phentermine for about five months when she found out that she was over two months pregnant. She has since stopped taking it, but I can't help but wonder what effects it could have on the fetus?

From what I've been reading, (one place is an article from Organization of Teratology Information Specialists) is that there's no conclusive studies. From what is known is there are no known increase in fetus birth defects.
The medication is out of your system quickly, as well. Within 4 to 5 days of your last dose the body is free from it. |

From what I read, it depends on the doseage of the drug taken during pregnancy. Smaller doses have shown no risk of damage to the fetus, but at larger doses there is a risk.
The other problem is that phentermine can cause gestational diabetes, and the withdrawal symptoms are worse during pregnancy. If she's off it now, thats good. |

Fortunately the last time I heard from her she was off Phentermine, so I'm hoping that means no lastin effects on the baby. I would think that she would have some pretty bad withdrawal symtoms, she seemed to rely heavily on Phentermine before her pregnancy.

The last thing a woman needs during pregnancy is a diet pill, or any other drug that is not directly related to her having a healthy pregnancy. I lost the most weight in my life after I had my second baby...nursing and walking. It's all back on now, but during that pregnancy, even though I weighed too much, nothing went in me but good things. That's just my oppinion, I can't live anyone else's life.

I am sure this is something she would take up with her doctor to make sure, I really don't think anything could happen but don't hold me to it, or anyone else here - remember we are not doctors ourselves.
The dosage could be an issue, but it also depends on when she did take it last, how far along she is as well. I knew a friend that was worried as she had been parting fairly heavy during the start of her last pregnancy, she was worried as within the 2 weeks of conception (and about a week after that, right before she knew she was pregnant), and all was well. |

One of the main issues that I read of it causing was neural tube defects. Those are easily picked up-on the quad test and later on ultrasounds. So if nothing else those should serve to put her mine at rest.

Phentermine wasn't something that she intended on taking when she was pregnant. Phentermine came first, and then she found out she was pregnant and started to panic. She's no longer taking it. Just wanted to clear up any questions.

So how was her withdrawal? Coming off it suddenly like that, especially when your body is already in a state of flux could be really rough. Did she cope ok?

She seems to have come off the pills quite nicely actually. I think it has helped her a lot knowing that she found out early and was able to quit before it was too late, or at least she is hoping. She hasn't taken any Phentermine since she found out, and there have been no issues since I last posted. She hasn't mentioned her weight at all, which may be a good thing, being that she isn't as concerned with it as she is her baby.
