I am seeing my doctor at the end of next week. I will be asking for a prescription for this drug, but how do I broach it? I don't want to sound clueless and have him brush me off, but also don't want to seem pushy and end up being brushed off as a drug seeker.

Let him or her know its been something you have been thinking about and researching on your own for sometime now. Explain that you are aware of things but might have some more questions before starting and want to know his/her thoughts on it, but are quite interested in trying it. Thats how I went and told my doctor (who also happened to be a new doctor of mine, so it made it like twice as hard).

I started one of my meds with "What do you think of...". Then went into what Charlyn suggested, what I had read, why I thought it might help. That one was a "sounds good, let's give it a try", I think mainly because he knew me and my medical history. I wasn't one to try every drug available looking for something/anything. Phentermine was his suggestion though, as I nearly broke down in tears from being discouraged with my weight loss and lack thereof.

Do you talk to your doctor often? Do they have a good relationship with him? Just wanting to get some background information.
I think initiating the conversation with "What do you think of..." is great. Also, your doctor knowing that you've already been doing research should show that you're really serious about this. |

I have had a long relationship with my doctor and we have often not seen eye to eye unfortunately. What you say to a doc; what do you think of, what do you then say if they turn around and say that they would never prescribe it? Is there a way to appeal, or get a second opinion?

Well you can always get a second opinion by seeing a new doctor. I guess that's what I would do - talk to somebody else and tell them that you've done your research and now what you want.

Most times if you have a good relationship with your Doc they can tell what is going on before you even know. I once lived in a small town and my doctor knew everyone and treated most everyone, so I didnt even have to open my mouth when I walked in the door.

I sure am glad that I don't have one of those doctors Charlyn. I just can't imagine somebody knowing all my business even before I let them in on it.
I want a good relationship and still keep some matters to myself. |

I'm with you Jess. Good relationship is great...also knowing every other business in my life is just too much. I had a therapist who I saw and also saw at other activities completely unrelated...felt strange.

My Doctor actually came to me. We have tried all sorts of stuff to date with minimal results. This was the next option in the bag of tricks. So far so good
